Oak, Quercus robur, Blyborough Hall

 

This tree brings back so many memories. It was well over twenty years ago when we first walked at Blyborough Hall. It had gone into a Stewardship and I produced some walk leaflets with my old work colleague, Miles Hopper, sadly no longer with us. This tree was mentioned as 'the fairy tree' where a door and windows could clearly be seen in the base of the trunk. And you can still just see them here. Sadly the tree has lost it's magnificent top but we are sure they will leave the remaining trunk. 

Blyborough Hall, Lincs. A grand entranceway that has some magnificent oak trees.

Planted in 1840, this is Lime Tree Avenue in Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire.  It is the longest of its kind in Europe being 2 miles long with a total of 1296 lime trees. Looking forward to seeing these trees throughout the year.

Black Poplars, Populus nigra, Goxhill Haven

Black Poplar are a native tree that are now in decline in the UK with just 7000 remaining. They grow in isolation and prefer boggy conditions often near ditches and on floodplains. They can live up to 200 years and often loose limbs but they do regrow. 

Three Black Poplars in this hedgeline, the middle one having fallen over. All covered by a Tree Preservation Order.

Mistletoe, Viscum album, Messingham Nature Reserve

 

A few clumps of mistletoe grown on the trees at our local nature reserve. These photos were taken in January and we can see the results of the Christmas foragers !
